Please describe how you use the principles and ideals of the NETS to develop and facilitate authentic learning opportunities in your work. Provide specific examples of projects, lesson plans, or outcomes.
Creativity and Innovation (ISTE NETS for Students 1; a-d)
Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
(ISTE NETS for Students 4; a-d)
Two first grade teachers at Willow Springs Elementary wanted to create a class newspaper that could be easily shared with others. They wanted it to display student work, but knew their young students were not yet ready to type their own articles. Together these teachers, their students, and I used critical thinking skills to find an original and innovative solution. We decided to use Pages to compile the newsletter, inserting photos of the students’ handwritten articles into a template. We recorded students reading the articles and uploaded the final product to YouTube for viewing. By working together to create a project that accomplished all their goals, and by including the students in this process, we were able to model critical thinking and problem solving skills for those first graders and everyone who views their online newspaper.

Communication and Collaboration (ISTE NETS for Students 2; a-d)
Digital Citizenship (ISTE NETS for Students 5; a-d)
When I was teaching sixth grade, my students and I created a class blog. We were very excited about being published writers. This project provided an opportunity for my students to plan, prepare, organize, communicate, and collaborate. It also provided the perfect forum for discussion about digital citizenship skills like copyright, safe Internet searches, and personal responsibility for items published online. Our blog created a community feeling in our class. Students were engaged in writing. One student posted a complete paragraph about the school’s Golf Extravaganza. It was the first writing assignment he had turned in all year! My teammate and I later developed presentations on GoogleDocs about blogs and wikis that were used at school trainings and the Utah Coalition for Educational Technology (UCET) conference to help other teachers learn how blogging could enhance their ability to communicate, collaborate, and teach digital citizenship skills.

Research and Information Fluency (ISTE NETS for Students 3; a-d)
I have helped students develop research and information fluency skills through the creation of reports about states, countries, and even the solar system. I have taught them to use online resources like WorldBook, CultureGrams, and embassy.org to answer questions and gather reliable information. I set up a virtual field trip through NASA’s Digital Learning Network so students could learn from an expert via video conferencing. The reports themselves have taken a variety of forms -- slide shows, PowerPoints, Keynotes, podcasts, travel brochures, and posters. No matter the presentation style, students have shown that they have learned to locate and evaluate information and organize their findings effectively.

Technology Operations and Concepts
(ISTE NETS for Students 6; a-d)
For the past two years I have trained sixth-grade students to do all of the directing and editing for Sprucewood Elementary’s Principal’s Podcast. These students have learned to use iMovie to capture and edit digital media. They have also learned to use iPads as planners and tele-prompters to enhance their productions. They are now able to create the Principal’s Podcast independently, demonstrating that they have gained a deeper understanding of technology systems. They know how to select the tools and applications that will meet their production needs, and they are learning to effectively teach others the same skills.
